Inpatient and Outpatient Hiatal Hernia Surgery
Hiatal hernia surgery is performed in one of two ways: inpatient or outpatient procedures. What is the difference between the two? An inpatient procedure means that the patient will be released the same day the surgery is performed. An outpatient procedure will be the patient stay in the hospital overnight or even for a few days after the procedure. Most people would prefer the inpatient process since no one likes to stay in a hospital. However, it is impossible to say whether or not you will undergo one or the other until you have carefully weighed the options with your physician.
While you may have a particular preference, it would be best to allow the doctor to make the call. Granted, the doctor will also seek to ensure your wishes are met. But, it is also the doctor's responsibility to inform you of the proper steps you should be following. Again, when the doctor does this it is vital to resist the urge to disregard his advice. While inpatient hiatal hernia surgery might be inconvenient, it also may be the safest and more effective path to follow. Following the proper and safest path is the best way to ensure the outcome will be the desired one.
